Rotational Molding

The process of rotational molding helps to create durable plastic products such as outdoor equipment, laundry carts, pallets, and custom parts. Rotomolded pieces are known to be durable and structurally sound because each product is crafted in one piece. Hive Plastics is committed to providing superior quality products for many different industries. Our rotational molding facility has a multitude of tested molds that are used by some of the leaders in your industry. Our engineers can also help you create the part or product of your dreams. If you can imagine it, we can find a way to rotomold it correctly. Learn more about Hive Plastic’s rotational molding process below.

The Rotational Molding Process

The process of rotomolding involves heating a plastic powder to a high temperature, to a point where it is malleable. The plastic powder will be placed in a mold and heated until it coats the entire mold. Rotational molding occurs in a large machine, similar to an oven, that reaches up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit, while the mold rotates on two axes.

The steps in rotational molding are as follows:

  • Loading or Charging: Pre-measured plastic will be placed in a cold mold
  • Heating: The mold will be sealed and placed in the oven. Two axes will spin perpendicular to each other while the oven heats the plastic powder, and gravity helps to coat the mold
  • Cooling: Once the entire mold is coated, it will be placed in a cooling chamber and will use cold air or water to solidify the plastic.
  • Unloading: Once the mold stops rotating, it opens and reveals the hollow finished product.

Because the mold and plastic rotate, you can achieve a smooth finish. This process ensures that there are no seams, no weak points, and is best for large commercial products.

Creating Commercial And Custom Projects

Our manufacturing process for commercial and custom projects is unique because of our custom molds and ability to create custom products. Rotational molding is used for commercial products that need to have consistent thickness, sanitation, and strong corners. Rotomolding is the best process for creating larger products because it produces less material waste, helping your company achieve optimal cost effectiveness.

Hive Plastics has created a variety of products at different scales. Some of our common products include:

  • Industrial laundry carts
  • Bulk storage containers
  • Water storage or collection tanks
  • Industrial trash cans
  • Outdoor furniture or storage

Frequently Asked
Questions

What are the primary advantages of rotational molding compared to other plastic manufacturing methods?

Rotational molding (rotomolding) is ideal for creating large, hollow, and highly durable products. Because the process uses a rotating mold and gravity to coat the interior, the finished product is crafted in a single piece. This eliminates seams and weak points, resulting in superior structural integrity. Additionally, rotomolding is more cost-effective for large-scale items because it produces significantly less material waste and ensures consistent wall thickness and reinforced corners.

Can Hive Plastics help me develop a completely new or custom product?

Yes. While Hive Plastics maintains a multitude of tested, industry-standard molds, our engineers specialize in custom projects. We can work with you to design a unique mold that brings your specific vision to life. Whether you need specialized industrial laundry carts, water storage tanks, or unique custom parts, we provide the expertise to ensure your product is designed for longevity and performance.

What types of products are best suited for the rotational molding process?

Rotational molding is the premier choice for large-scale commercial and industrial products that require high durability and sanitation. Because the process creates a hollow, seamless piece, it is perfect for items that must hold liquids or withstand heavy-duty use without leaking or cracking at the seams.

Common examples include:

  • Logistics & Storage: Industrial laundry carts, bulk storage containers, and pallets.
  • Environmental & Utility: Water collection tanks and industrial trash cans.
  • Custom Equipment: Outdoor furniture and specialized parts designed by our engineering team to meet specific industry standards.
